The basics of mesotherapy for hair
How the procedure works, potential results and possible side effects.
Mesotherapy in brief
The point of the therapy is to boost the metabolism of the scalp, thereby stimulating keratin formation and the division of the cells that produce hair. How do we achieve this? If we want visible results within a reasonable time, we have to rely on the micro-injections used in mesotherapy, which are injected directly into the thinning area.
Causes of hair loss
Now let us talk about why we deal with this burning issue so much. Hair loss affects almost everyone; unfortunately it occurs regardless of age and sex. The most common form in men is hormonally driven hair loss, better known as male pattern baldness, which is caused less often by an overproduction of androgens (the collective name for male sex hormones) and more often by the reaction to them. Unfortunately it is increasingly common for very young men to complain about hair falling out ever more often. In women, by contrast, hair loss is caused by exactly the opposite, a drop in oestrogen levels. It mostly appears after the menopause, that is, in a later phase of life.
What is listed above are merely processes caused by general hormonal changes; hair loss, however, has countless causes that cannot be generalised so simply. Poor nutrition, a lack of vitamins and minerals, or poor genetics all contribute to the thinning of our crown.
The first step of mesotherapy
As with every treatment, the procedure starts with an assessment. A good diagnosis is important, because the special feature of mesotherapy is that it can be tailored to the individual extremely well. If we know which deficiency is causing the hair loss, we put together the serum to be injected in the right proportions. For example, if we find inflammation in the patient, we supplement the solution with organic silicon.
One of the most common questions is whether the injections contain artificial additives. The answer is of course NO. It is crucial that only pure substances enter the scalp, otherwise we may trigger an allergic reaction. (Click here for the main questions about hair transplantation)
How exactly does the therapy work?
After the assessment the treatment can begin. A session takes 30–60 minutes on average and is repeated weekly, more rarely every two weeks, over a period of several weeks. Since the hair follicles are 2–3 mm deep in the scalp, the stimulating serum has to be delivered there with micro-injections created for this purpose. There is no reason to worry: in our experience the procedure is not painful, at most some discomfort or tingling may be felt. The main components of the solution are primarily elastin and collagen, which are needed for the activation of the skin itself.
Most of the work, however, is done by the active ingredients responsible for the testosterone–DHT conversion, the amino acids that serve as further building blocks of the skin, and circulation-supporting ingredients, which also stimulate the proteins built into the skin, promote hair growth and reduce inflammation. Depending on the individual, a spectacular improvement can be seen after the third session, but sometimes 5–6 sessions spread over several months are needed.
Side effects and who we do not recommend it for
Much of the success of mesotherapy is due to side effects occurring only very rarely, and even when they do, they are a small price to pay for thick hair. The most common are erythema (redness), which subsides within a week, and pain in the scalp, which passes within 24–48 hours after the treatments.
Mesotherapy can be performed on almost anyone, but there are cases in which we do not recommend it, for example during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in case of a bleeding disorder, or if an allergy to an ingredient is found during the consultation.
Of course our clinic also performs mesotherapy treatments regularly. If you have questions or would like to book a therapy, you can do so with the button below!
