Benefits of PRF treatment during a hair transplant

Everyone considering a hair transplant wants to choose the best solution and the best clinic. It is important to know every small detail in advance, and we want answers to every question that arises before we make a decision.

FUE hair transplant procedures, methods, devices and treatments are constantly developing and modernizing. At the Hair Aesthetic Clinic HairHungary we always keep pace with the latest technologies.

One of the newer procedures that we also perform during hair transplants is PRF therapy, that is, scalp treatment by injection with platelet-rich plasma. What it is, how it is done and, most importantly, whether it works.

What is PRF therapy?

Whether we perform a skin-rejuvenating facial treatment, a hair-preserving treatment or PRF treatment after a hair transplant, the process is the same. The procedure begins with a blood draw, just like a routine blood test. This blood sample is then centrifuged for a few minutes until the blood separates into its different components. The heavier red blood cells sink to the bottom of the tube, and a pale yellowish liquid concentrates at the top.

This part is called plasma, and it contains concentrated platelets, the part of the blood that forms clots. Roughly a quarter of this plasma, in concentrated form, is the PRF, which the doctor injects back during the treatment.

The PRF portion of the plasma is very rich in growth factors, enzymes and proteins, which together with the platelets stimulate the natural healing process. This concentrated "platelet-rich plasma" is then injected with a sterile needle into the facial skin or, in our case, the scalp. It helps rejuvenate the skin and scalp, and in the scalp it helps the skin accept the hair follicles transplanted from the back of the head to the front and/or sides. Because the plasma comes from the patient's own body, there is no allergic reaction.

PRF treatment was originally used in heart surgery, later in the treatment of burns. Today it has become an everyday tool, from facial rejuvenation to the treatment of sports injuries. As a complementary treatment to hair transplants, it began to spread a few years ago to contribute to the regeneration of the scalp after a hair transplant and also to help the newly transplanted hairs take hold.

PRF scalp treatments

In our clinic you can experience first-hand how effective PRF treatments are. During hair transplant surgeries we perform a PRF treatment that is built in as standard, and we see that the transplanted grafts are stronger, of better quality and more likely to survive the procedure. It is known that PRF injections help prevent and treat hair loss, which is beneficial for the rest of the scalp where no hair transplant was performed.

The scientific background of PRF hair loss treatment

The use of PRF injections in the treatment of male pattern baldness, that is, androgenetic alopecia, was studied over one year. Although it was a small study with 20 participants, the results were statistically significant. Each patient received three PRF scalp injection treatments at 21-day intervals and a further PRF treatment after six months. The participants of the study had not had a hair transplant.

After three months hair loss had decreased in all 20 participants, and after six months and then after one year hair density had increased significantly. The study concluded that "PRF injections may have a positive therapeutic effect on male and female hair loss, without significant side effects".

In addition, a similar conclusion was drawn in another, similar 2014 study examining the effect of PRF on male baldness. The authors noted that "PRF injection is a simple, cost-effective treatment option for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness), with overall patient satisfaction".

A 2017 study examined the effectiveness of PRF treatment during and after hair transplant surgery. It found that PRF has "the potential to biologically stimulate the transplanted hair". The study established that PRF treatments increased blood supply around the treated area, which is thought to contribute greatly to the success of the hair transplant.

This study also referred to a much older 2006 study, when PRF treatment of baldness was still in its infancy. That older study found that in the area treated with PRF after a hair transplant, the growth of new hair was on average more than 15 percent higher than on the scalp not treated with PRF. In some patients hair density increased by 52%.

All of this is convincing, which is why we use PRF treatment at our clinic in every hair transplant. The most important aspect for our clinic is the satisfaction of our patients, so we strive to do everything to make every single transplanted hair start to grow.

How much does PRF treatment during a hair transplant cost?

In the case of a hair transplant, the price of the surgery already includes the PRF treatment performed during the operation, so there is no separate charge for it.
