How durable is a hair transplant?
You have surely met an acquaintance struggling with serious hair loss who complained that he could not find a lasting solution to his problem.
Various hair-growth products bring improvement only for a while, and even if he has given up the negative habits responsible for hair loss (poor diet, stress, smoking), he simply feels there is no lifelong solution. This conclusion, however, is wrong, because thanks to today's fully matured hair transplant methods we can wear thick hair for the rest of our lives, though this comes with conditions~
It has now been 9 years since Norbert Hosnyánszky used our hair transplant service. The picture (on the right) reflects this 9-year durability.
Norbert's video can be watched by clicking the words highlighted in gold.
Factors influencing the success and durability of a hair transplant:
-
Whichever clinic you visit, it is the duty of the treating physician to correctly assess the patient's condition during the consultation and to create an individually tailored surgical plan. Since no two people are alike, offers cannot be given in "packages"; an individual procedure is a serious requirement for an intervention of this scale.
-
During the consultation, factors affecting general health are also discussed (which can of course influence the relationship between healthy hair follicles and hair loss), such as: smoking, diabetes, vascular diseases, acute illnesses, etc.
-
The surgical plan itself. It happens that the hair transplant is limited to several sessions, i.e. for various reasons the dense result expected by the patient cannot be achieved the first time. The reason for this may be an inadequate donor area, or a disease affecting the recipient area, the scalp or the hair itself, e.g. in the case of Androgenetic Alopecia .

Our patient above is an excellent example of what was just mentioned: during the consultation we already outlined that at least 2 procedures would be needed. Shortly after his second hair transplant he reported increased self-confidence and a much more positive aura, which, according to him, was noticed primarily by his surroundings.
-
Precisely following the post-transplant instructions. In a previous article (which you can view by clicking the gold words) we already discussed exactly what happens and when after a hair transplant. At the end of the surgery the treating physician repeats the to-do list once more, which, without claiming to be exhaustive, is the following: Sleeping on a neck pillow, spraying saline solution, avoiding sunlight and sweating, etc.
-
The way the extracted grafts are stored and the parameters of the machine performing the transplant. This probably does not need to be over-explained. It is advisable to have the procedure always with the latest equipment performed, as this guarantees with the greatest certainty the integrity of the extracted grafts and minimizes the surgical trauma to the scalp. (Currently the most modern hair transplant device on the market is the Trivellini FUE Mamba.)
-
Rationalizing the patient's expectations - In plastic procedures the result is based on a rather subjective judgment. It sometimes turns out during the consultation that our patient's request cannot be fulfilled, for example because the donor area is inadequate. In such cases we must find common ground on what visual result our patient will be satisfied with and what is still feasible from a surgical point of view.
Gyula Éliás's hair transplant took place in early 2016. The picture on the right was taken 4 years after the procedure. His before-and-after gallery can be reached by clicking the words highlighted in gold.
In extreme cases the treating physician concludes during diagnostics that a hair transplant cannot be performed on our patient. In that case, as an alternative, the patient usually chooses the best-fitting one of our regenerative therapies .
How durable is a hair transplant? How long do the transplanted hairs last?
The above questions naturally come up in almost every consultation. And our reassuring answer is that a well-performed hair transplant lasts a lifetime. The explanation is that, under ideal conditions, healthy hair follicles are transplanted to the balding area.
Thanks to the clinic's more than 12 years of practice, our first results are as old as the appearance of the FUE technique in Hungary, a technique we have since perfected. In the following video, for example, a 10-year result can be seen:

However, the result of the transplant depends on the patient's lifestyle, hair type, age and health. It happens that several procedures may be needed for the result of the hair transplant to meet the patient's expectations. This usually comes up during the consultation, and most clinics give their quote accordingly to avoid later misunderstandings.
There is no reason to worry about the procedure, though; today most clinics work with modern equipment and techniques so that you, too, can regain your shaken self-confidence. We proudly state that, thanks to our professional expertise, we achieve successful hair transplant results at the highest possible rate, which you can verify in our before-and-after gallery .
Gergő's photos reflect "only" a 3-year result, but the video below was taken 7 years after his hair transplant. It is clearly visible that his result still shows the density of his youthful hair.
