The basics of mesotherapy II. The Dermaroller
The Dermaroller, a reliable complement to mesotherapy
In the second part of our article series we introduce you to the working principle, benefits and risks of the Dermaroller, and its effect on hair loss. If you missed it, you can catch up on the basics of mesotherapy treatment in our previous article.
What does the Dermaroller look like?
Let us start at the very beginning. The Dermaroller is a simple device that can easily be used at home even with bare hands, with a cylinder fixed to its handle that is studded with needles a few millimeters long. The derma roller was originally created to correct skin imperfections, but over time it was discovered that it is also effective against androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss).
The working principle of the derma roller
We simply roll the device over the area lacking hair, so the needles are pressed into the tissue and even puncture it. This shows that the roller is quite easy to use alone, yet it has pitfalls, which we will discuss later. The question may arise of why this is good at all. Hair growth fundamentally relies on genes that promote the development of new hair cells. For this, small openings covering the scalp and the rest of the body are needed so that growth can start within the hair follicles. The production of hair cells requires many chemical substances, in which the human regenerative capacity plays a big role.
The Dermaroller makes use of exactly this ability: when we roll the needles along the skin, we create small superficial wounds in the tissue. The body therefore starts local immune processes to create new skin in the damaged areas, thereby releasing human growth hormone and other substances. It is a well-founded fact that with the right procedure hair growth can be restarted in thinning areas, so we can witness spectacular results within a relatively short time.
It is especially important to emphasize the right procedure, since often it is not enough to rely on the device itself. One important step of mesotherapies is the dosing of the optimal "cocktail", which our experts compose during the consultation period. As we detailed in our previous article, the substances to be injected into the scalp contain no additives whatsoever, only the necessary elements.
At home, or not at home?
It is perhaps worth starting this paragraph with the pricing of the Dermaroller, as that makes it easier to answer the question above. The product is priced over quite a wide range both in Hungary and abroad. On average the price of a roller ranges between roughly 14 and 68 euros, but this covers only individual use. Many people do not know (and are therefore disappointed in the product) that clinical treatment with the help of adequate professionals contributes greatly to its effectiveness. Including local anesthesia, the treatment can be done in 30-40 minutes.
Of course, if someone wants to thicken their crown in the comfort of their home, they are financially definitely better off, as the method costs about a third that way. However, this variant has significant disadvantages, because the person usually:
-
cannot see certain parts of their scalp
-
does not know how much pressure to apply (and for how long)
-
is unable to target the area at the angle a professional can
-
cannot know the right needle size without a consultation
-
receives no complementary treatment, such as mesotherapy cocktails or other regenerative therapy
It is the general opinion among dermatologists that microinjection of our skin is not worth doing at home, since possible side effects are much harder to manage alone.
